Preventing Adult Bed Wetting On Your Own
Different types of nocturnal enuresis may be preventable or even treatable in some cases. Barring any physical problems or injuries, adult bed wetting can sometimes be prevented, or limited, with simple behavioral modification or bed wetting alarms.
For some people who wet their beds at night a few simple changes in their daily and night time routine can work wonders. These steps can be used as the first line of defense against unintended night time urination, but they may not solve the underlying causes of bed wetting for some adults.
Urinate Immediately Before Sleeping: This is an obvious behavioral change, but it is one of those simple things that can sometimes be overlooked. Adults who wet the bed often have issues with daytime elimination or urinary incontinence during the day as well. Frequent urination or urinary incontinence throughout the day may often carry over into night time bed wetting for many adults as well and me be a sign of more pressing medical problems.
Limiting Liquids and Caffeine: Sometimes simply reducing your liquid or caffeine intake during the evening hours is enough prevent some night time urination. Obviously the more liquids you drink the more liquid you will have to expel. While there have been numerous studies on the affect of caffeine on urinary output, the results are still somewhat conflicting and inconclusive. Some medical professionals do believe that caffeine can increase the need to urinate, so limited caffeine from chocolate and other foods and drinks can’t hurt.
Exercises: For some women who wet the beds due to lax muscles which can be exercised. Some medical professionals have reported that patients who suffered from adult bed wetting were able to lessen their incidents with a simple regimen of Kegel exercises. General exercise as a whole, especially exercises aimed at the stomach, back and pelvis may help tighten muscles and help prevent some night time wetting incidents.
Eliminating Stress: Though rarely the primary cause, stress and lack of sleep can actually contribute the nocturnal enuresis in adults. Using relaxation techniques, medication or simply learning better stress coping mechanisms while following the same relaxation routine each night before bed time can lessen the chance of urinating during the sleep for some people.
Changing Medication: Some medications cause are known to contribute to adult bed wetting, especially thioridazine, risperidone, clozapine and some other insomnia medications. Being open and honest with your doctor about your night time urination problems may lead to a change in medication which will not have the same unfortunately side effects.
Bedwetting Alarms: Using an alarm clock to wake yourself up for a bathroom trip at a predetermined time can help some, but many adults find they need a more sophisticated bed wetting alarm system. For some adults incidents can be avoided by wearing affordable and specially designed bedwetting alarms which make noise at the slightest hint of moisture during sleep. Absorbent Underwear: Some of the stress of night time adult bed wetting can be eliminated with proper preparation. Bed wetting alarms are one good solution, but using plastic mattress covers and wearing specially designed adult underwear or “diapers” may give you added confidence during the night. Most types of absorbent adult underwear are comfortable and nonrestrictive and can be put on in a variety of ways. If you wish to avoid buying them at your local store you can always avoid embarrassment and save some money by ordering your absorbent underwear online. To save even more money you may want to consider ordering a larger box than you think you need, simply to save on costs and shipping expenses.
